By now we all know what a horrible human being Sheriff Joe Arpaio is. He has been accused of human rights violations and his abuse of immigrants and inmates has been well-documented. But if you needed another reason to call for his immediate resignation, here’s one: Sheriff Arpaio failed to investigate over 400 sex crimes in his state with most of the victims being children as young as 2 years old.
What is even more despicable is that Arpaio likes to call himself “America’s Toughest Sheriff,” yet he failed to protect the most vulnerable people in his state; children and victims of sexual abuse. Instead of pursuing these cases, he turned his back on these children and put their safety at risk.
You would think he would at least offer a sincere apology and be remorseful for his complete disregard for victims of sexual abuse, but we’re talking about Joe Arpaio here. This was his apology: “If there were any victims, I apologize to those victims.” That’s it. He didn’t even offer to start investigating these crimes. What is this about “America’s Toughest Sheriff” again? Oh, it’s only when it targets hard-working immigrants. Tell Joe Arpaio he needs to resign immediately!
Arizona’s two Republican Senators, John McCain and Jon Kyl, have also come out against Sheriff Arpaio’s disgusting inactions. But this is not enough. Joe Arpaio has proven he is not fit to do the job he was elected to do; it is time for him to step down from office. The people of Arizona deserve someone who will look out for their best interest and Arpaio is not it.
